Chicago's Running have been making scuzzy, belligerent punk rock noise for a couple years now. On their new album Vaguely Ethnic, they show that they've gotten really good at it. The first several seconds of "This Is a You Problem" (which is a fitting companion title to their 2012 EP Asshole Savant) is just abrasive feedback. Eventually, you can hear some notes in there, but throughout, their guitar sound is dense and blown out. Their lyrics are unintelligible, but obviously aggressive. At one point, their power chord attack forms something like a traditional rock song melody, but that eventually dissolves into a series of prolonged, buzzing single notes. The track has bite, balls, and the degenerate humor of an asshole savant.
