Silvia Kastel’s noise-pop abstractions can turn on a dime, equally capable of making you feel tranquil or launch you into a dissociative state. Last year’s Air Lows was both disquieting and comforting, with moments of calm visible through her gloomy industrial fog. Her new song, “Errori,” has an immediately brighter, more new age feel, but it is no less unsettling.

On “Errori,” Kastel finds the perfect spot between blissful and uncomfortable: The track’s warm, acoustic instrumentation—a pitched-down vibraphone and a glass harmonica—is at first delicate and inviting, but the arrangement slowly descends into a chilling reverie. The ghostly glass harmonica melody builds till it reaches a dissonant, vibrating screech, while subaquatic bubbles of noise pop around it, trapping the song for its duration in a serene and discomfiting moment. On “Errori,” Kastel disarms listeners with the promise of gentle ambiance, then flips the script to explore how easily peace and quiet can be shattered.
