Chance the Rapper is joyful on record like few musicians are joyful; when he raps, he sounds superhuman and exhilarated, as if he’s just crashed through some intractable wall inside himself and is exulting in the freedom on the other side. “No Problem” explodes out of his new mixtape Coloring Book like uncorked champagne, fizzing joyfully with a gospel sample and Sunday-church organs. The song’s hook (“You don’t want no problem with me”) is technically a warning, and he opens the song by threatening record executives with sinister-sounding violence, but everything his cackling voice touches turns positive. In context, it sounds like he’s playfully promising Lyor Cohen a headlock and noogies. The message coursing beneath the wording is far more important: I cannot be stopped.

The single, which features Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz all happily playing second and third fiddles, feels like an acknowledgement of the 23-year-old’s unique position in the music industry, one he has navigated carefully. Chance is real-deal famous, a hero to millions of rap-listening kids, but he is somehow beholden to no record label or publicist for this achievement. He might be the most successful “free agent” in rap history, adding amendments to some how-to-make-it-in-music rules and rewriting others entirely, and “No Problems” is a brass band and a ticker tape parade right through the rap-industry center. This is his part; nobody else speak.
