Last year, Hamilton Leithauser teamed up with Rostam Batmanglij for I Had a Dream That You Were Mine, a brilliant partnership that found a solo path forward for the Walkmen frontman in a shared appreciation for the past. Leithauser’s new single, “Heartstruck (Wild Hunger),” suggests he recognizes what worked from his recordings with Batmanglij, this time pairing him with Angel Olsen—another inspired match.

Lush orchestration, waltzing piano, and lolling bass, channel a gorgeously surreal version of early-1960s baroque-pop. So does Leithauser’s familiar, formidable roar, lovingly parceling out observations about unwinding your watch, not having a moon to hide behind, and what’s “going to cap your night.” Olsen, as it turns out, is a wonderful foil for Leithauser; she shares his smoky vintage glamour and expressiveness in her verse and backing vocals. Leithauser and Olsen bring out an overflowing level of feeling in each other. By the time everything but the strings and acoustic guitar drop out, the force of Leithauser and Olsen’s performances has conjured a “wild hunger” that still gnaws at you.
