The Glaswegian producer Lanark Artefax’s “Glasz,” from his debut EP on Lee Gamble's UIQ label, could just as well have been called “Break Glasz”: It carries with it the sense of impending emergency, of barely restrained panic, of the thin line separating normalcy from mayhem. It is the soundtrack for a state of permanent alert. Despite the forceful propulsive energy, it never so much as budges forward; snares crack, hi-hats hammer, and plunging kicks explode like depth charges, but all the elements are kept circling warily in place. In the background, truncated whoops might be car alarms, or fragments of a riot kicking off. The song’s only melodic element loops over and over, Dopplering slightly as it rolls past, delay chain tightening as it all builds to a climax that never comes.
