On "#3," from Japanese group Nisennenmondai's forthcoming collaboration with the dub producer Adrian Sherwood, they revel in the interplay between texture and rhythm. Over a techno-inspired four-to-the-floor pulse, the trio and their mix wizard draw out rat-a-tat cymbal patterns and the gravelly tones of plectrums on bass strings into an exhilarating, all-consuming whir. It's like a slow-motion pick-slide of the gods. There are no notes, and there's no need for them, either; the clicks and clang and ripples upon ripples of analog delay are more than enough to hold you transfixed. It's as though a drumstick run along metal fenceposts had, by the magic of dub, been whipped into a virtual tornado of white noise. It's a bit like the hurricane-causing butterfly of chaos theory, just way more controlled.
