Having seen Holly Herndon (as both performer and audience member) at everything from a DJ night to a Keiji Haino concert to a gallery of the Guggenheim Museum, her ability to span club culture, the noise underground and the art world is that rare hat trick by an experimental artist. But rather than choose one path forward since her breakout debut album Movement, Herndon's sound has grown tentacular, moving in every direction at once.-=-=-=-

And as "Interference"—the lead track off her forthcoming Platform—reveals, she's added touches of modern bass music as well as vocals to her repertoire. Ephemeral and concussive at once, Herndon uses "Interference" to show what themes and sounds lie ahead on the album: Laurie Anderson-esque sighs minced fine, deep shivers of digital bass, radio static and jammed signals, electronic squelches and shattered glass. These elements are all touched upon by her whiplash sound design and then shuffled together like a deck of cards, dense and disorienting, impossible to pin after just one spin.
