Kelela's latest single, “LMK,” the first taste of her long-awaited debut album Take Me Apart,

begins in media res, her narrator spotting a potential lover in the middle of a crowd. “Saw your face in my lane/You can chase it for the night,” she sings, her voice as confident as her invitation. The Los Angeles-based singer has no time to waste playing coy, and with “LMK,” she makes a night without commitment sound as urgent as it is freeing. “Let me know/It ain't that deep either way/No one's trying to settle down,” she croons on the song's hook over handclaps and unusually sensual synth stabs. She’s backdropped by bass-heavy, industrial production courtesy of Jam City, that’s not unfamiliar to her world of electronic-influenced soul-singing. His pristine soundscape, while more minimal than what Kelela usually sings over, complements her well with its blend of space-age clubbiness and sultry R&B. It makes for what is probably her most pop-accessible song to date, an empowered and liberating song that asserts not just a woman’s agency, but also Kelela’s power as an artist.
