Back in 2016, the Philadelphia punk band Control Top released a brilliant self-titled EP about disposability, introversion, and lost teeth. Two years and a lineup change later, they return stronger than ever on “Type A,” the first single from their upcoming debut LP, Covert Contracts.

In the spirit of the band’s name, “Type A” keeps a tight grip on a tumult constantly threatening to overflow. After an ominous opening bassline, courtesy of frontperson Ali Carter, the track becomes a fiery tirade against those who bask in their self-righteousness. “The thought of chaos worries you/Only your solution will do,” Carter jeers over helter-skelter drumming and a vicious guitar riff. “Type A” concludes with a diss so pithy—“Your false authority is dreadfully boring to me”—it belongs on band merch. Control Top, on the other hand, are anything but dull.
