In Brackets is the new EP from London production team Dark Sky. It's the latest release on the Mister Saturday Night label, a Brooklyn upstart that's taken to releasing records after years of hosting some of the city's finest DIY dance parties. This one's the label's first release from a non-Brooklynite, and it offers a tough, romantic take on house that's laid bare on the EP's title track.

"In Brackets" builds slowly and elegantly, laying paper-thin melancholy over a standard pattern of kicks and snares. When the beat drops in the track's middle third, it's not a throw-your-hands-in-the-air, PLUR-style breakdown-- it's an "it's been raining all afternoon"-style breakdown. But the track returns quickly, and fiercely, with a more muscular rhythm section and fatty bass deposit. It's a thick, wet smear of a house track, one that lets just enough light in.
