The voice of Sampha Sisay has grown familiar in the last couple of years as a subtle, almost comforting background presence for other artists-- among them Jessie Ware, SBTRKT, and Drake. On "Without", a track from his debut solo effort, Sisay indulges previously unexplored experimental urges on the production end with a wobbly beat, joining acoustic and electronic sounds in a way that makes the melody sound physically broken. It's disorienting, if you're accustomed to his collaborative work, but his voice is distinctively soothing enough to anchor the whole thing.
