The music Kansas City’s Matt Hill makes as Umberto is unabashedly genre-based-- if the horror-film soundtracks of John Carpenter and Italian prog-rock group Goblin can be called a genre. Hill also mixes in hints of Italian disco and house music, but his primary vibe is that of an ominous score to an imaginary slasher flick. His warbly arpeggios continually hint at something dangerous lurking around the corner, as long as the blurry VHS you’re watching doesn’t break first.

Hill continues that trip on “Night Fantasy,” the opening track to his forthcoming Not Not Fun LP Confrontations. It opens with soft, mellow waves, then breaks into a steady drum-machine beat upon which Hill spills quivering synth lines. The song is perhaps a little cleaner than the more lo-fi sounds of previous Umberto albums like 2010’s Prophecy of the Black Widow and last fall’s semi-soundtrack Night Has a Thousand Screams. But it still bears Hall’s keen mix of retro creep and soaring pulse, perfect for a dark, chilly dance floor.
