Last year, Running released a criminally overlooked LP called Vaguely Ethnic, an album that should sit squarely in the wheelhouse of Metz and Pissed Jeans fans. Their new 7" is out July 22 on Ty Segall's Drag City imprint God? Records, and true to their reputation, this one pummels. They manage to harness their waves of guitar feedback, focusing them toward a loose melody while drums thwack and cymbals echo beneath the din. It's not easy to discern what the vocalist is shouting, but as they push their aggressive patterns onward, lulling you into a strange sense of comfort, they suddenly upend everything. The drums are eliminated and all that stands is blaring noise—splicing between a familiar pattern and complete chaos.
