Freddie Gibbs is from Gary, Indiana, but his versatility isn’t limited by any kind of Midwestern provincialism. Like any rapper worth his salt these days (and Gibbs is worth an ocean), he’s capable of unleashing over beats that come from just about everywhere. On “Paper,” Gibbs distinguishes himself from other artists making use of the Houston sound that’s currently in vogue by refusing to capitulate, to mimic the drawl of the Screw acolytes. He nods to the regional influences present by mentioning his chemical influences: “I got a muddy cup of that Texas dope and that good smoke from that Oaktown.” But those details are subsumed in Gibbs' consistent ability to make any beat thoroughly his own.
