The second album by Brooklyn quintet Kings Destroy, A Time of Hunting, swivels through stoner rock and doom metal, adding touches of thrash, grunge, and even arena-sized ’80s excess to balance the low, slow heft. Kings Destroy plays this stuff pristinely, with guitars that cut through the mix like sharpened blades and a rhythm section that lays back and leans in at the most intuitive moments.

“The Toe”-- a slow burner with murder on its mind-- epitomizes this quality, as it steadily builds from a solitary, "Smoke on the Water"-esque riff to a refrain that recalls High on Fire at their most sticky. Kings Destroy includes two members of hardcore idols Killing Time, but they deliver these six minutes from a safe distance, like mannered veterans locked forever within their own narcotized groove.
