Oakland band Wax Idols released their debut LP No Future last year on Hozac, which had bubblegum hooks that fell somewhere within the realms of "garage". The band you hear on "Sound of a Void" isn't nearly as sunny. Really, aside from Hether Fortune's vocals, there aren't many elements that trace back to the sunnier aspects of No Future. For their album Discipline & Desire (out March 26 via Slumberland), the band is toting darkwave synths for a sound that closely resembles the song's title. And sunshine or no, the band still delivers a strong hook. (It sure isn't the cheeriest phrase, but there's definitely a sing-along element to Fortune's central line, "Let's turn down the static world.")
