Philadelphia based producer Starkey has frequently brought melody and a propensity for playing with rhythm to dubstep, a genre which once had a fairly rigid sense of self.  The producer’s new track, “Blaster”, from the upcoming EP of the same name (out October 29 via SMOG) goes from an imperial-sounding drumless opener to sudden handclaps and madcap laser sounds that do the title justice—and that’s all within the first minute.  Brave that sonic laser field, and you might suddenly find yourself floating in the midst of an enormous orchestral flourish, a monolith of sound that lasts for more than a minute before the song plunges back into violence.
