A lashing thrill ride of a song, “Haunted Wheelchair” skitters and surges for four-and-a-half minutes and then quite literally screeches to a halt. It’s the opener to English outfit Evans the Death’s forthcoming third album, Vanilla, and it exacerbates the bleakness of last year’s Expect Delays to rather harrowing effect (it also lays to rest the band’s earlier indie pop inclinations). The outset of “Haunted Wheelchair” is inky murk with rusty keyboard streaks. Then comes a dissonant guitar note with the impact of a sudden incision and vocalist Katherine Whitaker’s gripping first line: “On my back and on the street/ Terrified.” The song, which outlines a seemingly random act of violence, draws emotional might from Whitaker’s vehement delivery and urgency from its knotted structure. The instrumentation, meanwhile, provides another source of fascination, especially when a detuned piano clangs carnivalesque amid writhing guitar for a moment before the throttling end.
