As Lone, Matt Cutler has tried out an assortment of dance music modes, mixing weightless downtempo and thundering rave revival on last year’s Levitate. His forthcoming EP, Ambivert Tools Volume One, continues to explore the tension between club bangers and private listening. Lead single “Crush Mood” is a walloping house track that emphasizes Cutler’s ability to blend big club sounds and tiny ones, with a blistering kick drum anchoring them both. In addition, light vocal samples, and Cutler’s smudged and quiet synths makes for an effortless study in contrasts. Eventually, all those elements dissolve into the peaceful, humming static of Lone’s mixer. While Cutler’s heart remains in the club, on “Crush Mood,” he’s a true ambivert, evoking the middle ground between quiet introspection and a raucous, strobe-lit scene.
