“Paper Trails,” the latest single from Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington’s forthcoming LP as Darkside, Psychic (out October 8 through Jaar’s Other People label in partnership with Matador), kicks off with a slow-stepping beat and a touch of sinister sexual energy. The song plays out its own noirish narrative, as Jaar wonders aloud where the object of his affection has disappeared to amidst reverb-soaked guitar plucks. In the song’s second half, the moment of clarity finally arrives, as “Paper Trails” opens up to reveal the dense melancholy lurking in the shadowy corners of its subconscious.
