Philadelphia’s Palm are musical autodidacts, untrained on their instruments and committed to refining their amateur aesthetic. On their 2015 LP Trading Basics and this year’s Shadow Expert EP, they nodded to their eccentric forebears Battles, Deerhoof, and Animal Collective, translating these influences into a manic, feral sprawl.

Palm’s new single, “Dog Milk”—from their forthcoming album, Rock Island—is a blaze of math-pop maximalism, frenetic rhythm, and sampled steel-pan drums. It’s such a strenuous, vigorous effort that the band scarcely seems able to sustain it so long, and in the song’s final moments, they sputter into a terminal collapse worthy of William Basinski. “Dog Milk” is a breakthrough for Palm, an original expression of their ferocious energy.
