With his Ethiopian Records moniker, Addis Ababa producer Endeguena Mulu has chosen a descriptor that seems so broad as to be without definite meaning, instilling a layer of mystery. Like his fellow countryman and labelmate Mikael Seifu, Mulu takes from Ethiopia's deep musical tradition and runs it through his hardware. Machines buzz like flies, the programmed beat moves as if mired in deep mud. And when all of that fades away three minutes in, a phantasmal melody arises. Mulu puts it in dialogue with a metallic beat and voices that chant from deep within his machines. At turns, E.R. imagines Burial located in industrial Ethiopia rather than London, or an ancient world overrun with dystopian technology.
