Cheena's five members are New York City natives, and they know their history. On last year's debut tape, they reimagined twangy desert rock from the perspective of the glittery 1970s downtown scene—the hypnotic riff to "My Hand Is Shakin'" would fit right in among the stylized sleaze of New York Dolls. "Did I Tell You Last Night?", off a new 7", follows its lead, with vivid duelling guitars (one provided by noise artist Margaret Chardiet, aka Pharmakon) underpinned by a sprawling motorik beat. Owing to their attitude and energy, Chardiet's bandmates all come from harsher, mutated corners of the city's current raw punk scene, and their collective force offers a much-welcomed antidote to squeaky-clean big-box New York.
