On Kodie Shane’s new single, “Kissing Pink,” the 18-year-old rapper drops her buoyant, bubblegum voice down to a low whisper. “I swear this time is moving funny like the Matrix,” she sings, hovering in the intimate space between a murmur and a hum. “I can’t fake it.” Tempered and sedated, “Kissing Pink” is a subtle deviation from her typically gleeful, frolicsome pop-trap. Her only verse is over in the first minute, leaving more than half the track’s runtime for her hushed coos and pitched-up echoes which volley in sleepy, shadowy parallels. The production, helmed by longtime collaborators Matty P and D.Clax, aka GreystonePark, is perfectly minimal: Finger-prick beats and ripples of synths reverberate into the airy atmosphere and let the song breathe. The seductively simple “Kissing Pink” continues in Kodie Shane’s free-spirited experimentation.
