The inescapable Swede gave Coldplay their most festival-ready song by surrounding Chris Martin’s wide-eyed wail with buoyant keyboards, blissfully pushing the tempo before demanding the audience jump up and down—like, a lot. But for his remix, Danish producer Kölsch turns down to a controlled, undulating thump, reducing those keys to a handful of lonesome notes while subtracting Martin’s presence so all that remains is a ghostly ooh. It paces toward a climax that never comes. Avicii’s crowd-galvanizing drop is replaced with a glittering emptiness, the sound of a sky full of stars, but no one on Earth to share them with. The beat drops back in, revealing a different sort of bliss that can be found in solitude.
