Frankie Rose began as a solo act, and still thrives as one. After a brief flirtation with band life in 2014, when she released an LP with indie pop band Beverly, she returns with "Trouble," off her upcoming fourth LP, Cage Tropical. The track is Frankie Rose’s chance to return to the mystical, outer space-themed synth-pop that she created before. It opens with choppy, looped vocals that sound like sparks flying off jumper cables. Shortly after, the voices retreat, and she quickly launches into a pulsing, staccato krautrock drum beat that contrasts heavily with her sedate delivery. “Sometimes I want to run away/I tell myself that no one else can help me,” she sings. It’s a bit dramatic—she even acknowledges so in the line immediately following it—and it fits into the pace of the song, like she’s sprinting away from the scene of a crime. It’s no secret that outrunning your internal issues is impossible, but Frankie Rose is so charismatic here, she makes you believe it may be feasible after all.
