Each and every DJ Koze song is an invitation to step into a world much more peaceful than our own. The colors are more vivid, the surfaces are more plush, the sonics are warm and psychedelic. Such is the case with “Hawaiian Souldier,” Koze’s contribution to a recent compilation from the Swedish label Studio Barnhus. The track is a veritable terrarium of pleasing, brain-tickling sound: Its bright synth lines orbit the track like the sun casting radiant rays; the softest drum pads dance around cheerful vocal clips; bubbly strums of surf-rock guitar mix with what sound like ghostly theremin whispers. In the background, a salty sea breeze floats amongst all eccentric sound, and every now and then, the synths crescendo like a wave hitting a rock wall. It’s overwhelmingly pleasant stuff—like so many of Koze’s songs, another box of wonders to unpack at one’s leisure.
