The super-cranked BPMs and typically howled vocals from Jacob Bannon leave the actual message of "Aimless Arrow" impossible to decipher, so you imagine Converge wants you to take its title at face value. Which is to say: prepare for sudden, piercing attacks coming from all sorts of unexpected angles. And that's pretty much what you're getting on Converge's first single from All We Love We Leave Behind, the Boston band's first album in over three years. "Aimless Arrow" is Converge reintroducing themselves by not fitting comfortably into "metal," "punk," "hardcore" or "math-rock" so much as a catch-all M.O. of pure aggression. Yet every riff, careening time signature shift and drum fill is plotted out so meticulously and executed with such precision, "Aimless Arrow" triggers an alternate reality where the mathletes are the real jocks.
