“Being TV Girl’s first album, French Exit is a very impressive work of musical art. At this point in time, I have been listening to TV Girl for around 4 years, but I wish I had found them sooner as they are most likely my favorite band — easily in the top 3. They stand out largely because their music is so unique for so many reasons. Their vocals, use of sampling sounds, the vibes the songs give off, and how every song tells a story that can be relatable to so many people in so many ways also makes them very appealing to people depending on their emotions and what is going on in their life. When driving I love to cue up the about dozen TV Girl songs I listen to religiously as I love the kind of music they create. By going through this album, I have had to make some additions to that list, and will start to listen to whole albums so I’m not missing anything as it truly surprised me that I had never heard of some of these songs before. While this album isn’t perfect, I believe that, Louise, The Blonde, Birds Dont Sing, and Lovers rock are perfect or near perfect songs. While not every song is as good as those 4 are, I do believe that most of the songs are decent being pretty close to 7/10. Some of the songs simply aren’t that good, but they are the exception to the album. By averaging individual song ratings, the album would get an 8/10. However, that doesn’t capture how hard it is to have such perfect songs and that it gets exponentially harder to make better songs, as well as how enjoyable the whole album is. If I take everything into account, I would rate French Exit a 9.3/10. It is truly one of my favorites and I can’t recommend it enough.”

“I love that George Clanton and Tv girl partied up for this. Same exact idea but ranging in relatively different types of ideas of ‘nostalgia’. This album screams early 2000s and mixtapes some bums from your highschool were selling that were just burned from songs on the internet that they just pirated because it was the new thing to do. And honestly shit hits the mark for a TV girl album. I just think people are too hung up on their old albums. It’s quite a magical thing that they’re expanding upon their sound and working with different artists all the while making consistently great music. I personally thought this was a great collab album. But one thing I will share is, is that it definitely isn’t their best. Is it horrible? No! This is a great installment to their already growing diverse collection. But I’m most definitely expecting more from other types of sound. Because in my opinion, comparing their shot at rock (Summers Over) and Gospel (Grapes Upon A Vine) were definitely better than this. Whether it’s just a more consistent or just better structured tracks. I just feel like the project as a whole dwindles of identity to the giants like Death of a Party Girl and French Exit. And it makes me wonder if their new groundbreaking popularity from the recent years has affected their mindset and drive to make music. But enough of the theorizing. This was definitely a great project. Try this out if you like early 2000s and was a sucker for malls (I was).”

Grapes Upon the Vine

“Grapes Upon the Vine is basically a complete 180 of what TV Girl covers. And I respect that heavily. The album is still sample heavily (what I love about TV Girl.) but with a gospel twist to it. With tracks like ‘Shame’ and ‘I’ll Be faithful.’ with a straight up Choirs in the track. Their lyrical writing is at their best here in my opinion. Especially with the subject matter being quite different here. They can still deliver that feeling, just with different ingredients added and removed to the mix. I like to think this album is like the healthier version of their other albums. It’s good. But you’d rather eat the cookies from the cookie jar (Who Really Cares, French Exit and Death of a Party Girl.) The flaws of this album is that the songs can get pretty bland. With some samples being pretty repetitive which is surprising. That one part of Higher ground for example is god awful to get through as its sample is just done so bad. Otherwise. It’s good, but not their best. But they proved that they can change up their style. This totally could’ve been done way worse. But this album shows that they’ll be able to develop and grow as a band.”
