So Close To What
“Once an infrequent alt-pop star, she’s finally broken through via her stage presence and ability to craft a shiny banger. 2023’s lukewarm LP THINK LATER relied on generic pop tropes, but recent singles have sharpened her vision – “It’s ok I’m ok” and “2 hands” were bombastic, but “Sports car” was score-settling. So Close To What, her third album, is a sleek and flirty collection that proves “greed”
So Close To What
“Tate McRae was just a toddler when the Pussycat Dolls dropped ‘Buttons’, but the nostalgic reference suits the now-21-year-old her like a glove – just one listen to her latest single ‘Sports Car’ will make it obvious why fans’ mash-ups with ‘Buttons’ are so popular. Like Nicole Scherzinger’s posse, the Canadian artist has killer dance moves and a flair for sultry, self-confident club pop. This sou”
THINK LATER
“Pop is littered with one-time viral sensations struggling to make the leap to household name. Having tasted TikTok fame in 2020 with ballad You Broke Me First, 20-year-old Canadian Tate McRae watched the streams rack up (it currently has 1.27bn of them on Spotify), before disappointing with last year’s muddled debut album, I Used to Think I Could Fly. However, hasty follow-up Think Later – its tit”
So Close To What
“It’s an album to get you in a mood, it's dancy, it has that 2000s r&b/pop sound, vocals on point, lyrics are fine, definitely her most commercially appealing project. Production can be a little repetitive tho, not gonna lie. She really hit that sweet spot of Nostalgic Pop Music. “So Close” invokes the charm and execution of Spears’ “Britney,” or more specifically Furtado’s “Loose.” It’s sharp and well-toned. “So Close To What” is probably one of her most confident and matured project yet.”
SO CLOSE TO WHAT??? (deluxe)
“Tate McRae’s new album So Close To What (Deluxe Edition) feels like a confident upgrade to an already strong album. The new tracks add more emotion and attitude without feeling like extras, showing off her blend of sharp pop hooks and honest vulnerability. It’s polished, catchy, and proves she’s continuing to grow into her own lane. Favs from Standard: Revolving Door, Greenlight, Bloodonmyhands, Dear God, & Nostalgia Favs from Deluxe: Tit For Tat, Horseshoe, & Anything But Love”
THINK LATER
“Arguably one of her best and shows ALOT of growth from her first album”
