Jamie Woon's 2011 debut is nothing short of a gift that will refuse to stop giving upon every listen. Mr Woon is without a doubt a masterclass at conveying such beautiful, raw emotion in his music that forces you to reflect on your own self-reflection and this most definitely shines best in Mirrorwriting. The first track on the album titled 'Night Air' perfectly sets up this reflective, yet somewhat cathartic feel so well for the concurring tracks in a way that I sort of just can't explain - you'd have to listen to it yourself to interpret it in your own way but I'm sure you'd understand once digging your ears into this beauty. Tracks like 'Spirits' and 'Lady Luck', which are my two of my personal favourites, have in their own unique way this really adventurous and natural theme once again of self-reflection (noticing a pattern yet?) that for me are conveyed in such perfect ways through the use of uplifting chord changes and flowing accapela vocal additions that bring a whole new dimension and personality to the record. It's no surprise too that after the success of Burial's remix of Woon's 'Wayfaring Stranger' in 2007 that they would eventually hook up with Bevan going on to produce 'Night Air' which when baring that in mind when listening, you really can hear his part in it despite not being full-frontally credited in it. I'm astonished I didn't listen to this record any earlier, considering I did know about Jamie Woon as an artist beforehand, but I'm so glad I did eventually. Gorgeous.
