“Some records arrive with such formidable critical reputations that questioning them can feel almost impolite. Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra is one of those albums. A politically charged blend of avant-garde jazz, folk melodies and big-band experimentation, it is routinely spoken of as a landmark recording. After several listens, however, I'm still not entirely convinced that admiration for the album always translates into enjoyment. That isn't to say the record lacks merit. Far from it. There are moments throughout that are genuinely striking, particularly on the second side, where the music feels more focused and emotionally direct. "Song for Che" remains the standout. Written by Haden during his years with Ornette Coleman, it combines the idealism of the project with an actual melodic framework that gives listeners something to hold onto. Likewise, "War Orphans" provides welcome structure amid the record's more chaotic passages. For ears that aren't fully converted to the free jazz cause, these tracks offer proof that the album's political ambition can coexist with memorable musical ideas. The problem lies in the lengthy stretches where the ensemble drifts into collective improvisation. "El Quinto Regimiento" in particular feels overextended. What some listeners will hear as spontaneous freedom can just as easily sound like directionless clatter. Interesting textures and fragments emerge, but they rarely develop before disappearing again. The result is music that often feels more admirable than engaging. There are echoes of greater records throughout. At times, Liberation Music Orchestra sounds as if it's attempting to occupy the territory between Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain and Charles Mingus's The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. It shares the former's sense of grandeur and the latter's political and artistic ambition. Yet it lacks the melodic strength and structural coherence that make those albums essential. Brilliant moments float into view only to fade away before they can fully take shape. Another issue is the absence of a truly commanding performance. Unlike many classic jazz records, there isn't a virtuoso turn that grabs the listener by the collar and refuses to let go. Nor does the album fully embrace the ecstatic intensity of artists such as Pharoah Sanders or Alice Coltrane. It sits somewhere between orchestrated composition and free-form expression, but never entirely commits to either approach. That's not necessarily a flaw. The album is rarely unpleasant, and its political spirit remains admirable. Haden's vision is sincere, courageous and deeply human. But good intentions and historical importance are not always the same thing as great listening. After three complete spins, I can appreciate what the album is attempting while still feeling that its reputation slightly exceeds its rewards. Ultimately, Liberation Music Orchestra contains three or four genuinely compelling ideas, but might have benefited from pursuing one of them with greater clarity and purpose. It's a record that commands respect more readily than affection. While some listeners will hear a masterpiece, others may find themselves admiring it from a distance rather than eagerly returning to it. For me, it sits comfortably in the middle tier of the DeAgostini jazz collection: interesting, occasionally beautiful, historically significant, but far from life-changing. Worth hearing, certainly. Essential? I'm not so sure. And despite its lofty status, there's no individual track here that compels repeat listens in the way "Acknowledgement" from A Love Supreme does. Sometimes the most honest response to a revered jazz album is simply: I can see why it's important, but I don't love listening to it. That's where I remain with Liberation Music Orchestra.”
