“I first discovered Phoebe Bridgers back in 2017 because of Tumblr, which honestly feels like the perfect way to have discovered her. I remember hearing Stranger in the Alps and immediately feeling like there was something different about her songwriting. It wasn’t just that the songs were sad, it was the way Phoebe could take something painfully specific, uncomfortable, or even funny and somehow make it feel incredibly relatable. So when Punisher came out, I already had a connection to her music, and this album felt like watching that songwriting grow into something even more expansive. What I love most about Punisher is how emotionally complicated it is. Phoebe doesn’t just write about heartbreak or loneliness in a straightforward way. There’s anxiety, self-doubt, grief, spirituality, relationships, mortality, dark humor, and this strange feeling of being completely overwhelmed by the world while simultaneously being detached from it. Songs like “Chinese Satellite,” “Moon Song,” and “Savior Complex” feel incredibly intimate, while “Kyoto” gives the album this much-needed burst of energy and personality. And then there’s “I Know the End,” which might be one of my favorite album closers ever. The way it starts so quietly and gradually builds into absolute chaos is incredible. By the time Phoebe is screaming at the end, it feels less like you’re listening to a song and more like you’re finally releasing everything the album has been holding inside. I also appreciate how Punisher doesn’t try to make sadness beautiful all the time. Phoebe can be hilarious, cynical, detached, and devastating within the same song. That’s what makes her music feel human to me. She understands that sometimes you’re going through something horrible and your brain still finds something completely ridiculous to focus on. As someone who’s been listening to Phoebe since discovering her through Tumblr in 2017, Punisher feels like a natural evolution rather than a reinvention. Stranger in the Alps will always have that special place for me because it was my introduction to her, but Punisher feels bigger, more confident, and somehow even more emotionally layered. There’s a reason people still talk about this album years later. It’s one of those records where the meaning changes depending on where you are in your life. You can listen to it at 20 and hear one thing, come back to it years later and suddenly understand a completely different lyric. Punisher isn’t an album I simply enjoy listening to. It’s an album I feel. And maybe that’s the best thing I can say about Phoebe Bridgers after following her music since 2017: she has this rare ability to make you feel like she’s putting words to thoughts you didn’t even know how to articulate yourself.”
